Coach Jeff Smith |
|
Coach
Smith is beginning his sixth year as Head Football
Coach and Athletic Director at Hueytown High
School. In 2007, he led the Golden Gophers to their
best season since 1958 with a 10-2 record. He was
named the 2007 Bob Finley Coach of the Year and the
Birmingham News Western Coach of the Year for the
second year in a row. In 2006, he led the Golden
Gophers to a 9-3 season, and was named Jefferson
County Coach of the Year by the Monday Morning
Quarterback Club. In 2004, he led the Golden
Gophers to the State Playoffs and was named the
Hueytown Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year.
He is
from Anniston, Alabama, where he was an All-State
football player at Walter Wellborn High School under
the direction of Coach Mike Battles. He was a four
year starter at guard and linebacker for the
Panthers. After receiving a football scholarship to
Jacksonville State University, he went on to be a
four year letterman and a three year starter for
Coach Bill Burgess. The Gamecocks were 44-6, and
made four straight trips to the National Playoffs
and played for two National Championships.
Coach
Smith started his coaching career in 1992 at Handley
High School. He w as
offensive and defensive line coach, strength coach,
and head track coach. The Tigers went 11-3 and
advanced to the semi-finals in 4A. In 1993, Coach
Smith moved to Hueytown and rejoined his high school
coach Mike Battles. He served as offensive
coordinator, strength coach, wrestling coach and
head track coach at Hueytown High School. In 1995,
Hueytown advanced to the 6A semi-finals. In 1996,
Coach Battles and Coach Smith moved to Pascagoula,
Mississippi to coach at a new school called Gautier
High School. Coach Smith served as offensive
coordinator, strength coach, and head track coach.
The Gators went 10-0 the first season they had a
team. In July, 1997, Coach Smith and his family
accepted the head coaching job at Ohatchee High
School. In six seasons as Head Coach of the
Indians, they were 41-24 and advanced to the
playoffs three times. Coach Smith was named Calhoun
County Coach of the Year for three consecutive
years. In 2002, the Indians finished the season as
Region Champions and advanced to the quarter finals.
Coach
Smith is married to the former Lisa Angel of
Anniston, Alabama. They have three children. Judd
is thirteen and a student at Hueytown Middle
School. Leah is seven and Jett is six, and both are
students at Hueytown Elementary School. The Smith
family are members of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. |

Coach Brandon Turner
Coach Turner is a 1994
graduate of Handley High School in Roanoke,
Alabama. He later went on to get his degree at the
University of Alabama. From 1999 to 2001, he
coached at Wadley High School, where he was part of
two consecutive playoff teams with one going to the
semifinals. From 2001 to 2003 he was on Coach
Smith’s staff at Ohatchee High School, going to the
play offs both years. He and his wife Ashley have
been married for two years. This is his sixth year
at Hueytown, where he is the Defensive Coordinator,
linebacker coach and assistant head coach. |

Robert Hawk
Coach
Hawk is entering his seventh year at Hueytown High
School. In addition to football, he teaches
zoology. Coach Hawk has over twenty-one years of
coaching experience in Georgia, Florida and
Alabama. He is a Troy State graduate. He and his
wife Beth have three children; Chris is eighteen,
Anna and Lizzie are both seventeen.

Coach
Brandon Northcutt
Coach
Northcutt is a 1994 graduate of Hueytown High
School. He was a four year letterman in football.
He was the recipient of the Butch Wilson Award, the
Scrambler Award, and was named Team Captain his
senior year. He was the WSMQ Offensive Player of
the Game for the Hueytown vs. Jess Lanier game. All
of these awards were given while Brandon was on the
team of “A Few Good Men.” He has formerly taught
and coached at McAdory and Pleasant Grove and was
part of three Junior High County Championships
before coming back to Hueytown to coach and teach.
In April 2007, Coach Northcutt was awarded the Ellen
Northcutt Teacher of the Year Award, which was named
in memory of Coach Northcutt’s mother, who was also
a teacher. In order to receive this award, you must
be nominated by a student, parent or member of the
PTA/PTSO. He is married to Dawn and they have two
children, Lexie and Braden.

John Isaacs
Coach
Isaacs is a 1984 graduate of Gaston High School and
a 1992 graduate of Jacksonville State University.
Coach Isaacs has been coaching at Hueytown High
School for nine years. He will be coaching the Wide
Receivers for the 2008 football season. He has two
sons, Eric who is eleven and Thomas who is seven.

Chris Elmore
Coach
Elmore is a 1994 graduate of Fort Payne High School
and a 1999 graduate of Mississippi State University
with a bachelor’s degree in Business
Administration. While playing quarterback and
safety at Fort Payne for his father, Jerry Elmore,
he was a three year letterman in football and was
voted permanent team captain his senior season. He
was recently named to the “All-Time Fort Payne
Wildcat Team” as a starter at free safety. Coach
Elmore and his wife Cassandra have been married for
three years and are expecting their first child in
January. He will coach quarterbacks during the 2008
football season. In addition to his football
duties, he will coach the Varsity Boys Basketball
Team.

Coach
Allen Russell
Coach
Russell was a four year letterman and team captain
on the football team at Charles Henderson High
School in Troy, Alabama. He graduated from Troy
State University with a degree in Physical Education
and Health. He also has a history degree from UAB.
Coach Russell returned to his alma mater to work as
an assistant football coach under his high school
coach, Jay Jeffcoat. He has twenty years of
coaching experience, most of which was in South
Alabama. He and his wife, Angela, have been married
for eight years and have one child, Hadleigh, who is
two. He will be coaching the defensive line during
the 2008 football season.

Stephen E. Clark
Coach
Clark is a 1989 graduate of Saks High School. A two
year letterman in football, Coach Clark received the
Team Captain Award as a senior. He then attended
Jacksonville State University, where he participated
on the football team as a walk-on from 1990-1992.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history
from JSU in 1999 and a Master of Arts degree in
Secondary Education from the University of
Montevallo in 2007. Coach Clark is in his third
year at Hueytown as a history teacher and coach. He
will coach the secondary for the varsity football
team and coach golf. Coach Clark is married to the
former Andrea Rondayle Butts of Birmingham. They
have three children; Stephen Bennett is five,
Elizabeth Anders is three, and John Robert is one.

Zac Glaze
Coach
Glaze is a 2002 graduate of Oak Grove High School
and a 2007 graduate of UAB. While at Oak Grove he
was a four year letterman in football and
basketball. He was voted permanent team captain of
the 2001 Region V Championship Football Team and the
basketball team the same year. Coach Glaze was
named to the All-Metro Football Team and the 1st
Team All Area in basketball. Coach Glaze coached at
Oak Grove three years prior to coming to Hueytown.
This will be his second year coaching at Hueytown.
He will coordinate the offense for the freshman
team.

Coach Toby Morgan
Coach
Morgan will be the Defensive Coordinator and line
coach for the freshman football team. He is a
graduate of Clay-Chalkville High School and was a
three starter at defensive end and tight end on the
football team and was named the best defensive
lineman his senior year. He is a graduate of UAB
and is beginning his second year at Hueytown. He is
married to the former Angey Burgess, and they have
one child, Pierson. |

Coach Bryan Wilson
Coach
Wilson is a 1997 graduate of Central High School in
Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He participated in football,
basketball, and baseball. After graduation, he
earned an AA from Shelton State Community College in
Tuscaloosa. He also earned a BA in History, and a
BS in Physical Education from the University of
Alabama. Coach Wilson has taught in the Henry
County and Dale County school systems in southeast
Alabama. He is entering his fourth year in
education and currently teaches physical education
at Brighton Middle School.

Athletic Trainer - Kevin Handel
Kevin Handel is a
1995 graduated of Grissom High School in Huntsville,
Alabama. He graduated from Troy State University
with a B.S. degree in Athletic Training in 1999. In
2000, he graduated from Mississippi State University
with a Masters Degree in Sports
Administration/Marketing and got a Masters Degree in
Exercise Physiology in 2001. Kevin is a certified
athletic trainer and is employed by Princeton
Hospital. He provides all health care coverage for
Hueytown High School Athletics.
